Project Four: Pair of Night Tables

Found Item: Pair of wood night tables with center drawer. The veneer was in good shape – no ripples or corner chips. Sturdy and heavy, and for sitting out in the alley, they were remarkably clean.

Where:
Found in the alley off of Maple and Noyes in Evanston around 6 am one fall morning, sitting by the dumpster beside a garage building.

The Makeover: After a wash with TSP to remove the patchy shine on the old finish, I primed, then painted in a neutral beige in a water-based satin. Then I used a random surface pattern that’s perfect if you can’t draw, like me, and need to rely on swirls and curlicues. I painted the white dots with an artist’s brush.

Materials: TSP all purpose cleaner, around $8 per box, Kilz primer on hand, Behr satin paint, $8/quart, recycled metal and plastic knobs with bronze paint, both on hand.
